Basi Gallery

›

On exhibition in this gallery are ethnographic as well as a number of botanical objects that are associated with the production, trade and consumption of basi, the Iloko traditional wine made of sugarcane juice and native growing herbal fermenting agents.

Adjacent to the “The Basi Revolt” Gallery, this exhibition is titled “Containing the Cultural World of Basi: Defining Ilocos and the Ilocano” and has a sub-section, “Reconstructing Ilocano Identity: Basi Trade and its Social Networks”. The exhibition themes reflect the cultural significance of basi especially among the Ilocano and neighboring ethnic groups in the Cordillera with whom they have most closely maintained social and economic relations through the centuries. Locally produced and foreign ceramics, cloth, ornaments that include trade beads and local filigree, and basketry, are among the items on exhibition.

The Basi Gallery is a permanent exhibit in the National Museum Ilocos that showcases the traditional Ilocano wine known as "basi". The exhibit highlights the history, production process, and cultural significance of basi, which has been a part of Ilocano culture for centuries. The exhibit features a collection of basi-making tools and equipment, including large clay jars called "burnay" used for fermentation, as well as a demonstration of the process of basi production. It also provides information on the cultural and historical significance of basi, which has been used in various ceremonies and rituals in Ilocano culture.

The Basi Gallery is known for its comprehensive presentation of the basi-making process, which reflects the region's agricultural heritage and traditional way of life. It aims to promote the preservation and continuation of the basi-making tradition, and to raise awareness about the cultural and historical significance of this important aspect of Ilocano culture. Visitors to the exhibit can learn about the intricacies of basi production, and appreciate the cultural and social significance of this unique Ilocano beverage.
