The Geology of the Philippines

›

The geological wonders of the Philippines take center stage in this captivating gallery. Here, visitors can explore the diverse range of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks that form the foundation of the country's islands. From hardened lavas erupted by the majestic Mt. Mayon to ancient rocks that predate the era of dinosaurs, the collection showcases the immense geological history of the region. The highlight of the gallery is a large relief map of the Philippines, offering a three-dimensional view of the country's geography. It provides a unique opportunity to observe the intricate layers of rocks beneath the Cagayan Valley Basin, Visayan Sea Basin, and the Cotabato Basin, revealing the folds and breaks that have shaped the landscape over millions of years.

In addition to highlighting the beauty and diversity of rocks, the gallery educates visitors about the destructive natural events that affect both Filipinos and the environment. A dedicated section sheds light on volcanic eruptions, lahars, earthquakes, tsunamis, and storm surges. Through interactive displays and informative exhibits, visitors gain a deeper understanding of these phenomena and their impact on the country. A special focus is given to the powerful 1991 Pinatubo eruption, which was one of the most significant volcanic events of the 20th century. A quadroscope allows viewers to peer into the past and witness the magnitude of this eruption, providing a window into the geological history of the Philippines.

For aspiring geologists, the gallery offers an activity corner where kids can immerse themselves in the role of a geologist. They can engage in hands-on activities to learn about identifying common rocks and receive guidance on proper cleaning, maintenance, and storage techniques for building their own rock collections. The gallery also houses a mini-theater where visitors can marvel at the mesmerizing rock formations that dot the Philippine landscape. From the enchanting Chocolate Hills to the breathtaking Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River, these natural wonders come to life, offering a fresh perspective and inspiring new adventures for future explorations.
